Checklists, Forms and Tests for Irlen Sydrome

In order to ensure the correct diagnosis, there are a number of tests that can be performed and checklists to be completed. Please take a look below for a more in-depth understanding and contact James if you have any questions.

Forms and Checklists

There are a number of forms and checklists available to help diagnose you/your family member. James is experienced in all areas of special needs, with 20 years experience as a special needs co-ordinator. James can test in a number of ways - for a full breakdown and in-depth information, please contact him. However you will also find below some checklists and forms that can be completed:

The Irlen Screening Test (IRPS)

The IRPS consists of:

  • A graded assessment of Irlen Syndrome through rating inefficient reading and strain and discomfort experienced.
  • An analysis of a range of visual tasks that replicate aspects of reading.
  • An assessment of the benefits of the correct overlay across twelve criteria associated with reading skills.

The test takes approximately 1 hour and results in:

  • 2 x correct coloured overlays.
  • 2 x full report with client profile, educational implications and advice for teachers.
  • Measured reading age (if relevant).

IRPS requires specialised training to administer. The use of the test is restricted to Certified Irlen Screeners - James Billett is certified to undertake these tests. Contact James to schedule testing.

The Irlen Lens Evaluation

Colours are chosen by looking through 75 sets graded of coloured lenses from across the spectrum of visible and invisible light in matched pairs. Colours are added and rejected in a series of layers and densities until the client and diagnostician are satisfied distortions have been eliminated. The Diagnostician identifies the symptoms, visual distortions experienced by client on a printed page, a wall chart, both inside and outside. The evaluation takes approximately 2 hours.

The following checks then take place to establish the correctness of the tint:

  • improvements in reading speed
  • improvements in reading accuracy comprehension
  • span of recognition
  • reaction to fluorescent lights
  • there is no colour on the page or environment
  • depth perception
  • walking

This individual tint is then manufactured in the laboratory in California. The tint is subjected to spectral analysis so that the combination of colours will be exactly the same as chosen with James.

Contact James to arrange a lens evaluation.

Autism Checklist

The ability to perceive accurately stimuli in the environment is basic to many areas of academic, communicative and social functioning. Although people with autism live in the same physical world and deal with 'raw material' their perceptual world turn out strikingly different from that of non-autistic people. Autistic people have 'unusual' sensory perceptual experiences that may involve hypo- and hypersensitivity, fluctuation between different 'volumes' of perception and difficulty interpreting a sense. Olga Bogdashina defines the role of sensory perceptual problems in autism identified by autistic individuals themselves. Contact James to complete the checklist or you can download the autism checklist here.

Case Study:

Cliff, 74 years old

Cliff had a successful career in mechanical engineering and transport management.
Cliff is able to read for a maximum of 20 minutes, before the text becomes distorted.

"When I was at school they had difficulty in teaching me to read. I was diagnosed as word blind. I was written off at school. Now I can read reasonably well but what I would like to be able to do is to read good quality newspaper books and novels. You miss out on so much knowledge. I always lacked confidence in myself and began to take in that I was useless."
